The Postgraduate and Further Training of Doctors Faculty was established in accordance with the Resolution of the President of Turkmenistan in 2012 and is a structural subdivision of Myrat Garryyev State Medical University of Turkmenistan. Until 2012, the faculty was called the Postgraduate and Further Training of Physicians Department.

The faculty is a centre for training medical personnel by educational programmes of higher education in residency, internship and further training training and professional retraining in full-time form of education on a budgetary basis. Over 30 departments of the university participate in the system of postgraduate medical education.

The main activities of the faculty:

- training in clinical residency in approved medical specialties in the system of a two-year educational professional programme;

- organizational and methodological support for training in a one-year internship in approved medical specialties;

- educational services and activities for medical personnel in the context of uninterruoted medical education;

- professional retraining of medical specialists;

- certification cycles for medical specialists;

further training of doctors in certain, the most topical directions of their professional activities.

The faculty introduces integrated programmes of postgraduate and additional medical education based on modular technologies, achievements of modern medical science and healthcare, principles of evidence-based medicine.

Teaching aids, books, manuals, clinical recommendations, etc. are published. The Faculty has Scientific and Methodological Councils for postgraduate education and further training of doctors.

Over the past years, tens of thousands of doctors working in practical medicine have completed further training courses at the departments of the Medical University, as well as on the basis of training centres established in large scientific and clinical institutions of practical healthcare. The main principles of postgraduate education of doctors are its planned nature, free of charge, general accessibility, uninterrupted professional development throughout their professional activity.
