The of Nervous Diseases and Neurosurgery Department was established  in 1932. The clinical bases of the department at the present stage are: S.A. Niyazov Medical Consultative Centre of Turkmenistan. (Peripheral Nervous System Diseases Prophylaxis and the Central Nervous System Pathology and  Pediatric Neurology Departments), Emergency Centre (Neurotraumatology Department), Educational and Scientific Centre for Maternal and Child’s Health Protection at Myrat Garryyev State Medical University of Turkmenistan. (Pediatric Neurology Department).

Over 800 students of all faculties are trained annually at the department. Teaching is conducted in 5 subjects: Neurology, Medical Genetics, Neurosurgery, Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Anatomy of Meridians and Acupuncture Points. The lecture course includes issues of topical diagnosis of diseases of the nervous system, the role of additional research methods in the diagnosis of diseases of the nervous system, issues of neurosurgical care for vascular diseases, injuries and neoplasms of the nervous system. The lecture cycle also covers the issues of vascular pathology of the brain and spinal cord, infectious and demyelinating diseases of the nervous system, diseases of the peripheral nervous system, emergency conditions in neurology, neoplasms of the brain and spinal cord, hereditary and degenerative diseases of the nervous system, issues of medical genetics, meridian anatomy, used in acupuncture.

The staff of the department has published textbooks: "Semiotics of the Nervous System Diseases ", "Nervous Diseases", "Medical and Clinical Genetics", "Neurology for Family Doctors" and "Neurosurgery", over 200 teaching aids, including: "Guide to Practical Skills in Neurology”, “Diagnostics and Treatment of Strokes”, “Emergency Aid  in Neurology”, “Diagnostics and Treatment of Osteochondrosis”. Created multimedia presentations of the lecture material of the department. Educational information is loaded into the information portal of the university available to students. The literature used is presented in electronic form for the medical library of the university. The department conducts classes to improve the level of doctors of practical health care.

 

The assistants of the department participate in morning medical conferences, examine patients, provide assistance to seriously ill patients, take part in solving difficult clinical situations, hold scientific and practical conferences, and perform duty in the air ambulance line.

Research activities are carried out in the following directions: complex therapy in patients with echinococcosis of the central nervous system; study of the features of damage to the nervous system in infectious diseases; features of vascular pathology in the hot climate of Turkmenistan; study of osteoporosis of the spine. Scientific works of the department are published in foreign countries, in periodicals of Turkmenistan, in collections of the scientific and practical conferences. The assistants of the department appear on radio and television, actively participate in public events.

Improving inpatient, outpatient, dispensary, ambulance and emergency aid is one of the priority areas in the work of the department. The results of the scientific research and new organizational forms of work proposed at the department are actively introduced into the practical healthcare of the regions of Turkmenistan.

 

The department has a scientific neurological group.
