The department was established in 1934. Today it is located in the educational centre of Myrat Garryyev Turkmen State Medical University. It has modern lecture rooms equipped with computers, multimedia technologies. Such disciplines as ‘Social Hygiene and Health Organization”, “History of Medicine” are studied at the department. In 2018, in the Medical University a new specialty “Medical social business” was introduced, in connection with this, new subjects appeared: “Introduction to Social Work”, “Economic Fundamentals of Social Work”, “Theory and Technology of the Social Work”.

 

Training of students, family doctors and postgraduate doctors’ education includes the following: obtaining theoretical knowledge in sphere of the history of medicine, theory and modern practice of public health, health management; learning at the seminars and practical lessons the fundamentals of  of medical statistics, assessment of the health of the population, organization of medical care, management techniques in health care and mastering the use of concrete economic tools in managing the branch; developing practical work skills at various levels of health management.

 

The main directions of educational work of the department are related to the development of modern teaching methods and educational technologies; development, writing and subsequent updating of textbooks, training manuals, teaching materials for all disciplines; the establishment and the expansion of cooperation with foreign medical universities engaged in the history of medicine, public health and health and health care, health care management and economy; active cooperation with health authorities of the country’s regions; organization and holding of the scientific and practical seminars and conferences.

 

Textbooks have been published by theу staff: “Social Hygiene and Organization of Health Care” and “ History of Medicine” in Turkmen; 74 methodical recommendations are developed, including: “History of Medicine”, “Fundamentals of Medical Statistics”, “Introduction to Social Work”, “Economic Fundamentals of Social Work”, “Theory and Technology of Social Work”. Multimedia presentations of lecture material have been developed.

 

The research work of the staff of the department is carried out in the following directions: study of the resultsof introducing State Health Programme, problems of tuberculosis among migrants with the development of prevention measures; effectiveness of health schools for patients with coronary heart disease; a national medical heritage in the Middle Ages.

The staff of the department has defended 1 doctoral and 14 candidate theses and published 12 monographs and over 500 scientific articles.
