The department was established in 1932. At present, the clinical base of the department is the Otolaryngology Department of S.A. Niyazov Medical Consultative Centre.

The staff of the department carries out educational and methodical work with the senior students of all faculties of the university. The programme for two weeks cycle has been approved for the postgraduate improvement of qualification of the doctors

Together with the organization measures and study process the staff of the department conducts scientific and treatment-consultative work. The results of the investigations are published in the scientific magazines, collections of the conferences and congresses.

At the department there has been prepared and defended 1 Doctor’s thesis, 13 Candidate theses. The results of many years’ investigations are the publication of the monographs “Old-age hearing loss” by M. Atamuradov together with Professors from St. Petersburg A.I. Lopotko and M.S. Pluzhnikov. The teachers of the department have published a textbook for students “Otolaryngological Diseases” in the Turkmen language.

The interdisciplinary educational, therapeutic, consultative, research and organizational work of Turkmen otolaryngologists has been recognized by the international community of otolaryngologists. In 1994 the Professor of the Otolaryngological Diseases Department M. Atamuradov was elected the Academician of the International Otolaryngology Academy – head and neck surgery (Finland).

The department has further improved its educational activities, training of specialists, modernization of scientific researches and workings out. The opportunities of the students’ using educational modules, multimedia technologies, work with textbooks into digital systems have been realised.

By the order of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan the teachers of the Otolaryngological Diseases Department  in collaboration with the Scientific and Clinical Center for Maternity and Child’ Health Protection conduct a research work “Research and innovative methods in the study of hearing in children and improvement of its effectiveness”.

The teachers of the department actively attract the students to the research work. The results of students works prepared for the competition of young scientists annually organized by Central Committee of Magtymguly Youth Organization of Turkmenistan three times took the 1st place.
