Medical education on the way of progress

Turkmen State Medical Institute was established in 1931. On August 27, 2010  by the Order of the President of Turkmenistan the Institute was transformed into the State Medical University of Turkmenistan; since June 2019, the University  is named after Myrat Garryyev.

Being the only medical higher educational establishment in the Independent and Neutral Turkmenistan, Myrat Garryyev State Medical University of Turkmenistan is training highly professional specialists in all medical spheres for the system of health and medical industry of the country.

At present, students study in a new educational complex corresponding to the world standards and which was solemnly put into operation on September1, 2010 on the Day of Knowledge and Student Youth with the participation of the Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairmen of the People's Council of Turkmenistan. All conditions necessary for teaching students, carrying out scientific investigations and propaganda of a healthy life style of the youth have been created in this new educational complex

After the foundation of the University, such new faculties, new specialties and clinical hospitals have been established. Among them are the Faculty of Sport Medicine and Eye Diseases Scientific-clinical  Centre (2011), the Faculties of Military Medicine and Doctors’ Post-diploma and Further Training  (2012), Stomatology  Production-and-training Centre (2013); specialty : Rehabilitation and Alternative Medicine with thin the Medical and Preventive Treatment Faculty (2014), specialty Sanitary-and-Epidemiologic Work within the Faculty of Military Medicine and Educational-and-scientific Centre for Maternal and Child’s Health Protection Centre (2015), specialty Medical-and-Social Work within the Medical and Preventive Treatment Faculty  (2018) and  Rehabilitation and Sport Medicine Faculty (2021).

 

 

At present, the structure of the University includes 8 faculties and 57 departments, Eye Diseases Scientific-clinical Centre, Stomatology  Production-and-training Centre, Educational-and-scientific Maternal and Child’s Health Protection Centre, Scientific-research Centre, centres of biotechnology, sport medicine, information-computer centre, student’s sport club, electronic library, educational and educational-methodological centres, and post-graduate course department.

Taking into consideration the fact that training of students at the University corresponds to the world requirements, in 2011, the University was issued the European Quality international award by the European Business Assembly International Organisation.

The University takes an active part in the realization of the concept of the uninterrupted vocational education by training and retraining of the staff at the Doctors’ Post-diploma and Further Training Faculty. About3, 000 doctors are annually taught by the programmes of the higher and additional vocational education.

 

International activity

 

At present, a close bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation has been established between the Medical University and leading higher educational establishments, and scientific-clinical centres of foreign countries. Besides, agreements on cooperation with Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Belarusian State Medical University, Helmholtz National Medical Research Centre of Eye Diseases of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Federal State Budgetary Higher Educational Establishment Astrakhan State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Bucharest have been signed.

Within the framework of the cooperation, a work on the introduction into practice modern methods of treatment and prophylaxis of diseases and on the exchange of experience of foreign medical workers in Turkmenistan, and joint scientific investigations are being carried out, further training courses are organized for Turkmen doctors in different directions of medicine and a work and cooperation with world famous medical equipment producers is developing and expanding.

 

 

Scientific work

Main directions of the scientific investigations at Myrat Garryyev State Medical University of Turkmenistan are:

The results of the scientific works are published in the scientific journals published in the country and abroad, presented at the scientific conferences, including international ones. Young scientists and students of the University participate in the scientific contests held in the country and abroad, including thoses t held by Magtymguly Youth Organization of Turkmenistan, taking prize –winning places.

 

Clinical bases

Medical workers are trained at the University in the clinical bases of different specialisations and in the University medical centres:

1. Scientific-clinical Centre of Eye Diseases;

2. StomatologyProduction-and training Centre;

3. Educational-and-scientific Maternal and Child’s Health Protection Centre.

Scientific-clinical Centre of Eye Diseases is a clinic of a new generation where various methods of diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases of that part of the population which needs a particular social protection –  children and citizens with disabilities as well as 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War veterans and home front workers, widows and soldiers of the Afghani war,  are used.

Scientific-clinical Centre of Eye Diseases consists of 6 departments: treatment of children eye diseases (for 25 patients), department of systemic eye diseases ( for 20 patients),  first aid department, laser and ambulatory departments and clinical laboratory.

Two rooms of children vision protection supplied with up-to-date equipment: phoropter, autorefratormeter, pneumotonometer, slit lamp, synoptophore, amblyocore,  and  accommodotrener are functioning within the ambulatory department. Up-to-date retinal pediatric system RetCam intended for early diagnosis, dynamic observation and control of the treatment of grave pathology of newborn babies often causing blindness – retinopathy of  prematurely-born babies has been installed in Turkmenistan for the first time.

A diagnostic room supplied with new ultrasonic device AVISO (France), HRT-3(Germany), and Spectralis OCT HRA (Germany) is also functioning in the Scientific-clinical centre of Eye Diseases. There is also a physiotherapeutic room with modern equipment. Successful operations of all types in children under general anesthesia  are ensured by the DRAGGER device (Germany). All this new equipment provide wide opportunities for working out and introduction of the scientifically grounded methods of diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases.

 

 

In the activity of the centre an important role is attached to the problem of children’s vision protection the solution of which is promoted by a complex of preventive measures undertaken by the ophthalmologists together with the workers of the Eye Diseases Department with the support of the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan. This, in its turn, provides wide opportunities for holding systematic seminars with the teachers of the kindergarten preparatory groups and primary school teachers of Ashgabat City to introduce developed preventive and methodiological programmes in the pre-school establishments and secondary schools as well as carrying out screening and monitoring of eye diseases without an interruption of the educational process. A purposeful activity of the centre workers promotes an early detection of the children from the groups of risk in the development of the anomalies of refraction and other eye diseases as well as their timely treatment and prevention of complications.

         In the scientific and research work, a particular attention is paid to prophylaxis, diagnosis and treatment of myopia alta, squint, congenital cataract and glaucoma, neoplasms, inflammatory and dystrophic diseases and other pathologies of organs of visions in children with the use of the scientifically-grounded advanced medical technologies. Scientific work on the introduction of new technologies into surgical treatment of congenital glaucoma and squint is being carried out. Together with the Russian ophthalmologists there have been developed new methods of surgical treatment of paralytic and convergent squint. (Patent for an invention №2483699;  № 2584077).

Highly qualified specialists of the centre together with the teachers of the Eye Diseases Department carry out medical- and- consultative, methodological, and research work where the experience of foreign colleagues is widely used. All opportunities of joint cooperation with international research centres are used to further develop ophthalmological science and improvement the level of knowledge and professional skills of young specialists. Within the framework of the bilateral Agreement on cooperation signed in March 2019 between Myrat Garryyev State Medical University and Helmholtz National Medical Research Centre of Eye Diseases of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, the programmes on the improvement of the professional post-diploma education of young Turkmen ophthalmologists and their participation in the international scientific-practical conferences and forums are being realized.

 

All new conditions and opportunities for rendering specialized medical aid at the highest technical and professional level have been provided in the Stomatology production-and-training Centre of Myrat Garryyev State Medical University.

All conditions for teaching students of the Stomatology Faculty of the University have been created; classrooms and medical rooms of the Orthopedic and Dental Surgery, Preventive Dentistry, Child Stomatology, and Post-diploma Training Stomatology Departments as well as two phantom rooms are supplied with innovation technologies.

          There are five departments within the structure of the centre; children’s, therapeutic, surgical, orthopedic and functional diagnostics. Any visit to the centre starts from the room of the hygiene room. There, children are taught a choice of hygienic means for oral cavity and methods of their use. There is also a phytotherapy room where procedures are carried out with the use of Irrigator device with medicinal herbs. Several types of devices have been installed in the radiology room for taking photos of high resolution which perform 3D X-ray photos of the dentofacial part and which allow to have a diagnostic photo of the  upper and lower jaws. In the Orthopedic Stomatology Department there is CAD/CAM room. With the help of CAD/CAM device it is possible to make any fixed constructions both full ceramic and metallic ones. These are crowns, inserts, veneers, individual abutments, bridge prostheses. A range of use of this technology is regularly expanding. The Dental Surgery Department consisting of the operation unit and surgery room is supplied with stomatologic devices Intego of the famous German Company SIRONA. A Production-and-Training Stomatology Centre is a base for carrying out training-therapeutic and research work at the stage of pre-diploma and post-diploma training of doctors in the children, therapeutic, orthopedic and dental surgery. The doctors of the centre together with the teachers of the corresponding departments carry out large-scale work on the prophylactic examination of children of school age. A number of research works on the development of new methods of diagnosis, prophylaxis of teeth caries and treatment of parodentium with the use of medicinal plants described in the scientific – encyclopedic work of the head of the state Medicinal Plants of Turkmenistan is being carried out. Today, the doctors of the centre can provide their patients with full range of specialized stomatologic services at the highest professional and technological level. The specialists of the centre make their worthy contribution to the strengthening of the health of our people.

 

 

Training-and-Scientific Maternal and Child’s Health Protection Centre

By the Resolution of the Esteemed President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov of July 12, 2015 №14334 “On Establishment of Medical Institutions”, on August 1, 2015 Training-and-Scientific Maternal and Child’s Health Protection Centre was established.

The work in this centre is carried out in three directions: pediatrics, perinatology and surgery.  The Centre is designed for 275 patients; there are 15 departments. In the centre a highly qualified aid is rendered to mothers and children coming from different regions of the country.

In accordance with the programme of regionalization of perinatal aid in the country, this centre was given level IIIA. In the centre aid is rendered to newborn babies with low weight and with different poor conditions. Treatment work is carried out in accordance with scientific and research works conducted in the centre. It promotes rendering qualified aid to sick children and reduction of  morbidity and  mortality.

The main direction of the scientific activity of the Training-and-Scientific Maternal and Child’s Health Protection Centre is “Improvement of the quality of caring and adaptation mechanisms of children born with a low weight.”

The centre established by the Resolution of the Esteemed President of Turkmenistan is carrying out a great work on training highly qualified specialists of the scientific and practical direction.

An intensive theoretical and practical training of the students of the University and medical school, house physicians, residents and specialists of different profile is carried out at the departments located in the territory of the centre.

To improve rendering aid to pregnant women and newborn babies, students, house physicians and young specialists master their practical skills in the room (phantom room) specially equipped with modern simulators.

The work of the centre is carried out in accordance with the National Programmes adopted in Turkmenistan directed to maternal and child’s health protection: “Safe Maternity”, “Primary Reanimation of Newborn Babies”, “Encouragement and Support of Breast Feeding”, “Integrated Management of the Diseases of Childhood”, “Early Development of a Child and His Preparation for School”.  A consultative work is carried out in the room “Early Development of a Child and Early Interference” with the parents of the babies born with a low weight, and rehabilitation measures with hypotrophic children.

Thanks to the opportunities of telemedicine, the professional and teaching staff of the departments and leading specialists of the centre hold consultations for the patients from all regions of the country with grave and complicated cases, in which young doctors and students participate.
