In 1995, on the basis of the Faculty of advanced training of the doctors were established the department of Family Medicine Therapy and Pediatrics, in 2000, both departments were consolidated into the Department of Family Medicine, clinical basis is the Central hospital with scientific-clinical center of physiology, Houses and Centers of health, university’s clinics.
In connection with the introduction of family medicine in the healthcare system of Turkmenistan, the department began the in-depth study of international experience in training family doctors from the first days of its existence, cooperated with the department of family medicine of the 1st Moscow Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov, universities of Connecticut and North Dakota, USA. The staff of the department regularly improve their qualifications, visiting foreign medical universities for training and exchange of experience in the field of training of health care specialists. Such trips took place in 2013, the University of Tartu of Estonia, and in 2019 the Riga Medical University named after Stradins of Latvia.
The main activities of the department are: teaching 1st year students in the discipline "Healthy Family"; the primary specialization of medical graduates of a medical university in clinical residency in the specialty "family medicine" for a 2-year educational professional program; postgraduate studies in a 1-year internship for family doctors; the department conducts primary retraining cycles on the basics of family medicine.
The department implements integrated postgraduate education programs based on modular technologies based on a competency-based approach and professional standards, actively used distance training.
Assistants of the department prepared an electronic version of “Collection of lectures on family medicine”, published the books “Handbook of the family doctor”, “Children's diseases in the practice of the family doctor”, “Internal diseases in the practice of the family doctor”; the guide “Emergency care in the practice of a family doctor”, “Features of a balanced diet at various age periods”, etc. Assistants of the department are members of the methodological councils for family medicine and postgraduate education, also members of the academic council of the university and other specialized councils.
The department is conducting scientific work on the topic “Antihypertensive drugs in the practice of family doctors”, the department participates in inter-department research projects, its assistants review scientific and dissertation papers, collections of scientific papers and abstracts, study guides, medical history and outpatient maps.
The staff of the department participate in medical examinations, conduct teleconference bridges with other departments, as well as with velayat hospitals, and other activities, prepared and implemented regulatory documents, clinical recommendations and protocols for the work of family doctors in the main areas of family medicine.
