The history of the of Human Anatomy Department dates back to the establishment of the Medical Institute in Turkmenistan in 1932, and Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy Department was established later in 1934. After integration of both departments in 1999, it was named as the Human Anatomy, Topography Anatomy and Operative Surgery Department.

At present, the department is located in the new building of the Morphology Centre and there are classrooms supplied with modern technologies. During the practical lessons in normal and topography anatomy, 3-D anatomical dissection table is used, and at the lessons of operative surgery the students master the technique of operations on virtual simulation devices. The department has a base where there is an operating unit for conducting both practical and experimental research work. All operations done by the students are broadcast from the operating unit to the classrooms. There is a vivarium supplied with modern equipment for keeping experimental animals.

The subject "Human Anatomy" is studied by the first and second year students of the Medical, Pediatrics, Medical-Prophylactic and Stomatology Faculties, as well as the Sports Medicine Faculty, Military Medicine faculty in specialty, “medical” and “sanitary-epidemiological business”. Education ends with state exam. The subject "Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy" is studied by the in the third and fourth-year students of the same faculties, the training ends with exams.

During the years of independence, teachers of the department have published over 150 methodological manuals and teaching aids; three volumes of the textbook of anatomy, operative surgery and topographic anatomy have been published in the state language.

Research work is underway on the topic "The effect of vagotomy on the morphofunctional state of the stomach and duodenum." The research results have been presented at 27 republican and international scientific and practical conferences (Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Israel). 10 rationalization proposals for improving the methods of vagotomy were made. In the experiment, there were developed and tested 3 new methods of gastric neurotomy (vagotomy), in 2009,2013, 2015 inventors patents and 3 international certificates were received. By the result of the work prepared for defending doctoral dissertation, one monograph has been published.

At present, the department staff together with the Morphology Centre conducts scientific work on the topic: “Determination of the anatomical and pathomorphological peculiarities of the cardiovascular system and their role in the occurrence of coronary heart disease”.

The scientific student group of the department is working in the direction of: “Kidney and spleen transplantation in the experiment”. In the group there has been created a film library of completed experimental operations, which are demonstrated at practical and lecture lessons.
