The Eye Diseases Department was established in 1932 and at present, the department is located on the base of the Scientific Clinical Centre of Myrat Garryyev State Medical University of Turkmenistan. The main tasks of the department are followings: teaching the students of all faculties in specialty “ophthalmology”; training clinical residents and interns, postgraduate students (intramural and extra- mural form of training) and doctors of science; ophthalmologists according to the programmes of the cycles of certification and certification improvement; training ophthalmologists in modern high technologies in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases according to programmes of thematic improvement cycles.
The staff of the department conducts educational and methodological work on the optimization and profiling of teaching the subject at various faculties. Over the past 5 years, the textbook “Eye Diseases”, the textbook “Clinical Anatomy of the Organ of Vision,” and the textbook for medical schools “Eye Diseases” and over 50 teaching aids have been published. Lecture materials for multimedia devices, test questions were developed, thematic albums, demo posters, and videos on all sections of ophthalmology have been also published. The classrooms are equipped with modern computer technology, the lecture hall is equipped for telemedicine sessions.
The staff of the department consults patients in the outpatient department of the Eye Diseases Scientific Clinical Centre of Myrat Garryyev State Medical University of Turkmenistan, equipped with all the necessary modern techniques. Inpatient treatment is carried out in the following areas: surgical treatment of glaucoma and cataracts, surgical correction of anomalies of clinical refraction, conservative and surgical methods of treating diseases of the retina and optic nerve, surgical prevention of progressive myopia, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the choroid, eyelid plastic surgery, operations on the muscles of the eyeball.
The main directions of the scientific activity are the development of new methods of diagnosis and surgical treatment of glaucoma, the vascular membrane of the organ of vision; corneal pathology, as well as early diagnosis and treatment of myopia. 10 doctoral and 43 candidate dissertations have been defended at the department. Over the past 5 years, 3 patents for the invention have been obtained, about 70 scientific papers have been published.
