The Hospital Surgery Department, one of the oldest departments, was established in 1937. Modern clinical base of the department is S. A. Niyazov Medical Consultative Centre of Turkmenistan (liver surgery, endocrine, plastic and reconstructive surgery departments), Cardiology Scientific  Clinical Centre (vascular surgery department).

The students of the senior courses of the Medical, Pediatrics, Medical- Prophylactic, and Military Medicine Faculties, and as well as those of the Sports Medicine, Nontraditional and Rehabilitation Medicine Faculties study at the department.

The department has published the textbook “Surgery”, “Surgical Diseases” in the Turkmen language, developed over 200 manuals in Turkmen and 27 in English, including “Emergency Primary Surgical Care”. The lecture material of the department is presented in the form of albums, audio recordings, multimedia presentations and in electronic form.

Research work is carried out in the following directions: the choice of alloplastic of abdominal hernias using tensometry; improving the surgical treatment of diseases of the anorectal zone; improving surgical treatment of diseases of the liver, biliary tract and pancreas; improvement of X-ray endosurgical treatment of thromboembolism of the veins of the lower extremities.

Today, there are tendencies to expand indications for the use of minimally invasive methods of diagnosis and treatment, to revise traditional approaches in a number of pathological conditions. In this regard, a comprehensive research topic "Modern technologies in the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of surgical patients" has been launched. Within the framework of this research work, priorities were given to abdominal surgery, development and improvement of medical equipment, minimally invasive technologies in surgery and transplantology. As a result of the research, new methods of diagnosis of surgical diseases, methods of rehabilitation and treatment of surgical patients using new medical technologies have been developed, for which 20 patents for inventions have been obtained; 12 rationalization proposals have been submitted; 18 implementation acts have been issued. The proposed methods of diagnosis and treatment are implemented in the practice of outpatient clinics and surgical hospitals, as well as in the educational and methodological process of the university.

The staff of the department repeatedly presented results of their works at the international congresses, symposiums and conferences. Scientific works of the department are 5 monographs, 25 inventions, 30 rationalization offers, over 700 scientific works published in the scientific journals in the country and abroad, in the collections of the scientific-practical conferences.

The assistants of the department conduct difficult operations, they are on duty as responsible surgeons, render consultative aid, supervise patients, participate in morning surgical conferences, consultation and rounds. Assistants render high qualified specialized aid to the patient of all regions of the country, doing difficult operations in the organs of the abdominal and thoracic cavity, introduce original methods of operations.
