The Pathological Anatomy Department was established in 1934. At present, classes in general and particular pathological anatomy are conducted with students, clinical residents, and also practical healthcare doctors improve their professional level at the department.

The staff of the department has published textbooks on pathological anatomy and pathological anatomy of infectious diseases and  atlas, the following  methodological manuals were developed: "Dystrophies and Their Significance in Practical Medicine", "Clinical and Morphological Basics of Inflammation", "Rules for Making a Dagnosis", "Pneumonia and Pneumopathy in Nnewborns", "Circulatory Disorders", "Clinical and Morphological Basics of Tumors", "Compensatory and Adaptive Processes", " Cardiovascular System Diseases ", " Respiratory System Diseases ", " Gastrointestinal Tract Diseases ", "Liver Diseases", " Nephrological Diseases ", "Occupational Diseases", "Morphology of the Thyroid Gland in Norm and Pathology", etc.

Much scientific work is carried out at the department: the influence of natural biologically active and chemical substances on the healing of purulent wounds and bone fractures is being studied; pathological anatomy of cutaneous leishmaniasis; clinical and anatomical comparison of atherosclerosis, hypertension, diseases of the liver and endocrine system; morphological state of the placenta. The priority direction is to study under experimental conditions, from a morphological point of view, the influence of some medicinal plants growing in Turkmenistan on organs and tissues. Together with other departments and medical institutions of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, the department participates in the scientific work "Anatomical, pathomorphological peculiarities of the cardiovascular system and the determination of their values in the event of coronary heart disease."

There is a scientific student group at the department, one of the forms of work of which is the preparation of macro- and micropreparations, the study of archival material, etc. Participating in clinical and anatomical conferences, analyzing complex cases on biopsy and sectional material, making a pathoanatomical diagnosis, preparing teaching aids, assistants of the department thereby assist practical health care.
