The department was established in 1932. At present, its training bases are the Hospital with the Cardiology Scientific Clinical Centre which forms a single scientific- educational complex training of the personnel for rendering the high-technological medical aid.

For many years the department is proud of its faculty and teaching staff. From the date of the establishment of the department its activity is carried out considering the best traditions, including the specialist training both in the hospitals and at the outpatient – polyclinic stage.

The trainings of the students of all faculties are held at the department, and the internal diseases residents are also trained there. The advanced educational methods are applied in the educational process, which provide the informational support and feedback with students, allowing raising the training of the highly skilled personnel to a new qualitative level.

The teachers of the department have published the book “Internal Diseases”, monographs, developed methodical manuals; the lecture material is presented in the form of albums and offered through electronic document delivery for the library of the university. Presentations on all sections of discipline for interactive demonstration are created.

The research scientific work of the department is devoted to the issues of the cardiology and pulmonology. The main direction of the research work is the ischemic heart disease, hypertension disease, cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, chronic heart failure, obstructive chest trouble, bronchial asthma. At present, the research work is carried out on high methodological level using up-to-date tool methods on the following themes: prognosis criteria of the chronic cardiac insufficiency of the patients with ischemic heart disease and results of treatment; the role of the vegetative nervous system in the prognosis of the complications in arterial hypertension in the aged patients; peculiarities of the course of cardiac deficiency in nonspecific myocarditis; functional state of pulmonary and central hemodynamics of the patients with bronchial asthma; scientific substantiation of the organization of preventive measures in the young and middle- age patients with myocardial infarction.

The results of the scientific studies of the department are published in different scientific and academic journals, and related reports are presented at the practical conferences. The   students and young scientists trained by the experienced workers of our department have taken prize-winning places, participating in contests held among the young scientists of Turkmenistan.
