The department of pediatric surgery was established in 1977. Its teachers are trained the 2^nd year students of the pediatric faculty in the discipline «Fundamentals of the care of pediatric surgical patients», and the 5^th year students of the general medicine and pediatric faculties in the discipline of “Pediatric Surgery with Orthopedics”.

 

During the lessons are used USE data, x-rays, the results of laboratory and instrumental investigations, as well as video materials of laparoscopic operations. To consolidate theoretical knowledge, students learn to fill out the patient's medical history. In operating theaters, students work as a second assistant. Postgraduate training of the department includes advanced training of the doctors, training in medical residency, postgraduate studentship and doctorate.

 

The department’s staff published such books as «Pediatric Surgery», «Practical Skills in Pediatric Surgery» in Turkmen and published more than 30 methodical workings and study methodical textbooks. Lecture material is presented in electronic form, for evaluation of students’ knowledge from general medicine and pediatric faculty the tests are prepared.

 

Clinical care is carried out on the basis of the Scientific-Clinical Center of maternity and child health care and Study-scientific Center of maternity and child health care of Myrat Garryyev State Medical university of Turkmenistan. The staff of the Department participates in morning conferences, councils, and reviews medical histories, engages in medical and diagnostic work, operates, and consults patients on medical aviation in the regions. At the clinical base, master classes in pediatric surgery and demonstration surgeries are held.

 

Research work is carried out in the following areas: 1. Study of malformations in children (spinal hernia, portal hypertension syndrome, urethral stricture); 2. Surgical treatment of parasitic diseases in children; 3. Issues of reparative surgery issues.

 

At the department 4 doctorate and 3 candidate dissertations were defended, 10 certificates of authorship for the invention were received, 3 certificates for proposal for technical improvement, as well as grant was received. Over 200 scientific papers have been published in periodicals of Turkmenistan and in foreign countries (Japan, Poland, Russia, and Turkey).

 

The department has a Students' Scientific Circle «Hippocrates», which attracts advanced students of general medicine and pediatric Faculties.
