From the date of the establishment in 1932 Turkmen State Medical Institute at the Children Infectious Diseases Department,  children infectious diseases are taught as a separate course. The history of the department as an independent division begins since1988.

At present, the Treatment and Prophylaxis of Infectious Diseases Centre of the Directorate of Infectious Diseases Centres of the Ministry of Health and the Medical Industry of  Turkmenistan is a clinical base of the department that is well equipped with facilities corresponding to the world standarts. There teaching is underway in the following sections: epidemiology, clinical peculiarities of the course, diagnosis and treatment of children infectious diseases. Senior students of the Pediatrics, Therapy and Medical- Prophylaсtic Faculties study at the department

The teachers of the department have published textbooks “Children Infectious Diseases” and “Infectious Diseases”, and the book “Fundamentals of Medical Knowledge” for pedagogical school.

Scientific works on the topics: “Clinical course of infectious mononucleosis, improvement of diagnostic methods and treatment” and “Improved clinical and diagnostic treatment methods of rotavirus gastroenteritis” are completed at the department. At present, clinical epidemiological peculiarities of the course of children infectious diseases and conducting preventive measures are are studied.

Educational and methodological work is carried out on a high level. All lectures and practical classes are represented in electronic form, visual manuals of the department are prepared in the form of albums, tables, video films.Tests and teaching aids are developed for each theme. Methodological manual “H₁N₁ influenza virus” dedicated to prophylaxis of infectious diseases, was published in Turkmen, Russian and English for the first time at the state level

The department developed “Qualifying characteristics” in children infectious diseases, teaching and methodological manuals, the list of practical skills for students and doctors is approved. During the academic year teachers of the department conduct demonstrative classes for young teachers, 5th-6th- year students, attending physicians and young doctors.

 

Work on deepening knowledge, an increase in interest in science and education, development of self-study work, promotion of creative searches and revealing talented youth is carried at the department. Competitions are held not only among students, but also among teachers on the state level (“Lecturer of the Year”, “Young Scientists” competition).

Teachers are members of the Methodological Council “Medical sciences” under the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan, “Coordination Commission” of the State Sanitary Epidemiological Service of Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan and an Emergency Commission against the Spread of Infectious Diseases, they actively participate in the prevention of infectious diseases, give consultations and practical classes in all regions of Turkmenistan. Teachers of the department systematically appear on television, radio, publish scientific articles on the prevention of infectious diseases in periodicals.
