The General Surgery Department with a course of anesthesiology and reanimatology has been functioning since 1932. The students of the 1st-3rd courses of the Medical, Pediatrics, Stomatology, Medical - Prophylactic  and Sports Medicine Faculties study there. At practical and lecture lessons, they study the fundamentals of general surgery: the scheme of examination and the rules for caring for surgical patients, the peculiarities of preoperative preparation and postoperative management of patients, the rules of asepsis and antiseptics, the basics of anesthesiology, methods and techniques for stopping bleeding and blood transfusion, the general principles of traumatology and purulent surgery.

Clinical residents and post graduate students are trained at the department.

At  the Surgery Department of the clinical base, the staff of the department annually performs over 1,000 various operations on the chest and abdominal cavity, and provides assistance to practical healthcare in the air ambulance service.

The staff of the department, in addition to educational, medical and educational works actively engaged in scientific activities. At present, the scientific direction of the department is the study of echinococcosis, reconstructive  and rehabilitation surgery and the development of safe anesthesia methods. The department completed and defended 13 doctoral and 27 candidate theses, published over 1,000 scientific papers, including several monographs.

For the first time in the practice of Turkmenistan, the staff of the department introduced the following: closed mitral commissurotomy, (1959); angiocardiography method, (1960); operations on the "open" heart under cardiopulmonary bypass, (1978-1989); method of auscultation of the esophagus in the early diagnosis of diseases of the esophagus and cardia of the stomach, (1988); reconstructive operations on the aorta and main vessels, (1985); surgical treatment of chronic venous insufficiency, (1985); introduction of cardioplegia and hypothermia with cardiopulmonary bypass, 1988; study of the peculiarities of congenital heart defects in adults in the arid zone,(1991); extracorporeal methods of treatment of diseases of the aorta and main arteries, (1992); reconstructive surgeries for diseases of the esophagus, (1993); use of echography and CT in the diagnosis of hepatobiliary pathology, (1983-2000).

A scientific group functions at the department, student scientific works are published in the periodicals of Turkmenistan and abroad, their authors take prize-winning places in the competitions held among young scientists of Turkmenistan.
