The department was established in 1935. At present, it is located in the physiology building of the Medical University and at the clinical base of the Ashgabat Prophylaxis of Alcoholism, Drug Addiction and Mental Diseases Centre. The department is supplied with modern equipment, which allows qualitatively improving the level of learning teaching material by students.

Besides Psychiatry and Narcology, the department teaches General, Family, Medical, Age-related, and Sports Psychology, Psycho-correction and Psychotherapy; also here interns undergo primary professional training and improve their qualifications for psychiatrists, experts in narcology, family doctors and other specialists.

Every year, the staff of the department consults over 500 patients, participates in extended forensic psychiatric and military examinations, and carries out air ambulance trips. The staff of the department helps in organizing “round tables” at the university, open discussions on topical issues of psychology, narcology, psychotherapy, scientific and practical conferences, conducts information and propagation work among young people in other educational institutions, participates in television programmes on these issues.

 

The main direction of the research investigations of the department is the development of socio-psychological aspects of maintaining mental health of the population. A study is being conducted on the influence of the external environment and social factors on mental functions and states, taking into an account the individual psychological characteristics of the individual. The results help to form targeted methods for the prevention of stress and other mental disorders.

Within the framework of the developing popularization of sports in our country, the department conducts an initiative scientific work on sports psychology, and studies the features of the mental state of young athletes involved in wrestling.

 The staff of the department defended 9 candidate dissertations, published 7 monographs, 2 manuals and 1 reference book for doctors, 4 textbooks, 2 popular science books, a large number of manuals and recommendations, and over 100 scientific articles.
