The department was established in 1935. The department is located on the base of the Educational – Scientific Centre for Maternity and Child’s Health Protection Myrat Garryyev State Medical University of Turkmenistan. The main staff potential of the department is the candidates of science.

The students of the Medical Faculty in the cycle discipline of "Obstetrics" study normal course of pregnancy and child-bearing, as well as obstetrical pathologies, and study a phantom course. The "Gynecology" education subject includes studying of gynecological disorders, as well as aspects of child and adolescent gynecology. Within the academic activity, the students familiarize themselves with the work of all departments of the obstetrics and gynecology hospital, master practical skills under the supervision of experienced teachers.

The special attention is paid to the study of the theoretical issues and mastering practical skills for provision of emergency assistance to the pregnant women and gynecological patients, possibilities of their application in independent work. Therefore, at the practical classes solving of situational tasks, analysis of cases of history, thematic modules with the use of modern data for nosology, situational tasks and role plays developed by the staff of the department, obstetrical and gynecological phantoms, video materials are widely used. The Internet portal for self-studying with introduction of all subjects in the text and presentation form, provided by the educational plan, is created and widely used for the purpose of availability and complete learning of the educational materials. The remote passing of the academic tests and final classes is introduced.

The staff of the department has published the textbook "Gynecology", developed over 100 methodical manuals, including: "Collection of lectures on obstetrics", "Collection of lectures on gynecology". Multimedia presentations of lecture and practical classes of the department were prepared. Introduction of the principles of the programme "Safe Maternity" into the educational plans continues. On the basis of this programme, the guidance manuals are developed and educational on-line seminars are conducted.

The main directions of the scientific activity of the department is improvement of diagnosis and treatment of the disorders of the reproductive functions of the women, prophylaxis of the diseases transmitted  by genital organs sex, planning the family. All these are directed tothe decrease of maternal perinatal and gynecology diseases and mortality, increasing quality of health and life of women of Turkmenistan.

The staff of the department participates in rendering the consultative and clinical assistance to the country's population. On the daily basis the staff of the department conducts clinical conferences, performs reviewing of case history, the most complicated cases, introduces new methods of diagnosis and treatment, renders emergency and planned aid through sanitary aviation. The assistants of the department regularly improve their professional qualification and take course in pedagogical and psychology. One of the forms of work, including appearance on on radio and TV, articles in the print media, lecturing for doctors and population, helps to the formation of a healthy lifestyle and prevention of diseases.
