The Dermatological and Venereal Diseases Department was established in 1932 on the basis of the Turkmen State Institute and the Turkmen Skin Diseases Research Institute. Today, the clinical base of the department is the Central Dermatovenerological Hospital of the Directorate of the Centers for Infectious Diseases of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan.
At present, all classrooms are supplied with computers and multimedia equipment which helps to conduct classes at a high modern level. For the study of various disciplines, a large own clinical photographic material of the department, modern foreign scientific and educational materials, as well as information from the Internet are widely used. Numerous visual aids reflecting the photographs of all clinical varieties of skin diseases, its atypical clinical forms, and all stages of dermatosis, are used at lectures and practical lessons. Besides, at the practical lessons, students supervise patients in all clinical departments of the Central Dermatovenerological Hospital, which allows not only to master the topic under study, but also to acquire relevant practical skills.
The department trains the 4th-year students of eight faculties according to the programmes that provide for the specifics of training and mastering dermatovenereology, as well as the peculiarities of the clinical course of skin diseases in Turkmenistan. For all the topics studied, there are numerous teaching aids that are regularly updated. For student groups studying in English, the necessary material on dermatovenereology was collected in the language being taught.
In 2010, the staff of the department published a textbook "Dermatological and Venereal Diseases" illustrated with color photographs.
The establishment of the Postgraduate Education of Doctors Faculty at the university has created all conditions for training and further training of doctors - dermatovenereologists. At the Dermatological and Venereal Diseases Department, in the cycle of postgraduate education of doctors, taking into account the peculiarities of theoretical and practical training, doctors - dermatovenereologists, family doctors, military doctors are trained. An integrated programme has been developed for doctors of related specialties to master the urgent problems of dermatovenereology.
The main directions of the research work of the staff of the department is the study of cutaneous leishmaniasis, chronic allergic diseases, their treatment with the use of medicinal plants of Turkmenistan, as well as the course of dermatosis associated with the problem of the Aral Sea.
The students and cadets of postgraduate education, in addition to teaching by an improved method of treatment, get acquainted with modern methods of physiotherapy and balneological treatment.
The department has a research student circle, which is attended by students who are interested in the study of dermatovenereology. The results of their joint work with teachers are presented at the scientific and practical conferences and seminars.
